OAK BLUFFS
THE TABERNACLE
ABOUT
The Tabernacle is a covered open-air performance venue in the center of Trinity Park within the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association (MVCMA) campground in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. The wrought iron and steel structure is 100 feet in diameter and 100 feet high, with an approved capacity of approximately 1,678 people. It is a National Historic Landmark (designated 2005).
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Tabernacle hosts summer concerts, community sings, religious services, and cultural events during its seasonal operation. The open-air design allows sound to carry through the surrounding gingerbread cottage neighborhood. Events range from folk and acoustic music to community gatherings and the MVCMA's traditional programming.
HISTORY
The Tabernacle was built in 1879 of cast iron as the centerpiece of the Methodist camp meeting grounds, replacing earlier open-air preaching areas that had served congregations of up to 4,000. It is the fifth structure to serve as the campground's central gathering place. A major multi-phase restoration beginning in 2002 addressed column stabilization, lead paint removal, historically accurate lighting, cupola restoration, and clerestory rebuilding, with work substantially completed by 2019.
