ABOUT
Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell is a multi-purpose arena in Lowell, Massachusetts, owned by the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The facility seats approximately 6,500 for hockey and up to 7,800 for concerts and other events. It is the largest indoor arena in the Merrimack Valley region.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Tsongas Center hosts concerts, family shows, trade shows, and sporting events. It is the home arena of the UMass Lowell River Hawks NCAA Division I men's ice hockey team (competing in Hockey East) and the men's basketball team (America East Conference). UMass Lowell has invested more than $5 million in arena renovations since acquiring the facility.
HISTORY
The arena opened on January 27, 1998 and was dedicated to the memory of Paul Tsongas, a prominent Lowell native and U.S. Senator who represented Massachusetts. Originally known as Tsongas Arena, it was renamed the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell after the university took ownership. The facility has served as the region's primary large-capacity indoor venue for nearly three decades.
