WHEELOCK FAMILY THEATRE

ABOUT

Wheelock Family Theatre is a 600-seat performance venue at 200 Riverway in Boston, operated by Boston University's College of Fine Arts. The theater features a comfortable, tiered auditorium with 21 rows providing good visibility from all seats. It is dedicated to producing theater for diverse, multigenerational audiences.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Programming includes classic children's shows, family-friendly musicals, and thought-provoking dramas. The theater is committed to serving communities that are historically underserved: people of color, people with disabilities, and low-income families. Casting policies, affordable ticket prices, education programs, and accessibility provisions for people with disabilities reflect this mission.

HISTORY

Wheelock Family Theatre was founded in 1981 by Andrea Genser, Anthony Hancock, Susan Kosoff, and Jane Staab with the endorsement of then-Wheelock College President Gordon Marshall. Since its founding, the theater has staged more than 100 mainstage productions. When Wheelock College merged with Boston University in 2018, the theater was adopted into BU's College of Fine Arts, continuing its mission of inclusive, community-based theater.
