NORTHAMPTON
ACADEMY OF MUSIC THEATRE
ABOUT
Academy of Music Theatre is an 804-seat municipally owned performance venue in downtown Northampton, Massachusetts. Designed by architect William C. Brocklesby of Hartford in the Renaissance Revival style, the theater features orchestra seating, a balcony, and period architectural details. It is the first municipally owned theater in the United States.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Academy presents live theater, dance, music, film screenings, and arts education programming. The intimate size and historic setting make it a destination for regional and touring acts in the Pioneer Valley. The venue operates as both a performing arts center and a community cultural hub for the Northampton area.
HISTORY
The Academy of Music opened on May 23, 1891 with 1,000 seats. One year later, benefactor Edward H. R. Lyman deeded the theater to the Citizens of Northampton, establishing its unique municipal ownership. In the early 20th century, it hosted performers including Sarah Bernhardt, Mae West, and Harry Houdini. The theater transitioned to film screenings in the 1930s and screened first-run movies through the 1970s before being reclaimed as a live performance venue. Current capacity is 804 seats.
