CALVIN THEATRE
ABOUT
Calvin Theatre is a concert venue at 19 King Street in downtown Northampton, Massachusetts. The restored theater features a proscenium stage, orchestra floor, and balcony seating in a ~1,000-capacity configuration. It is the largest dedicated live music venue in the Pioneer Valley.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Calvin presented national touring acts spanning rock, indie, folk, jam, comedy, and alternative music. The restored interior features decorative paint and period moldings tied to the theater's original design.
HISTORY
The Calvin Theatre opened in May 1924 as the largest movie theater in Northampton, screening first-run films for nearly 70 years. It closed in 1994, was purchased and renovated with a new stage, seating, lighting, and period-accurate decorative restoration. The theater reopened as a live performance venue under IHEG management. It closed during the COVID-19 pandemic on March 16, 2020. A deal between owner Eric Suher and The Bowery Presents to reopen the venue was announced in 2023 but fell through in June 2025. The city released the Calvin's liquor license, and as of early 2026, the theater's future remains uncertain with potential interest from other buyers.
