ARLINGTON
CAPITOL THEATRE
ABOUT
Capitol Theatre is a historic six-screen cinema at 204 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington, Massachusetts. The building features elements of Classical Revival, Baroque, and early Art Deco styles and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The largest auditorium retains the original proscenium arch with 315 seats and surround sound.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming includes a mix of first-run mainstream and art-house films, 3D screenings, and classic film presentations. The restored lobby features granite columns and gold leaf that were hidden behind faux wood paneling from the 1960s until a 1986 restoration. Each of the six auditoriums is decorated in the style of the original theater.
HISTORY
The Capitol Theatre opened on November 25, 1925 as a 1,600-seat neighborhood movie house with a stage and dressing rooms for vaudeville, built by the Locatelli family. By the early 1940s, it was operated by Paramount Pictures through their subsidiary Mullins & Pinanski. In 1989, the theater was multiplexed into five screens (later expanded to six), with each auditorium styled to echo the original decor.
