NORTHAMPTON
JOHN M. GREENE HALL
ABOUT
John M. Greene Hall is a 2,225-seat Classical Revival-style auditorium on the campus of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. The hall features old-school wooden seating with a balcony level above the primary floor. It is one of the largest performance venues in the Pioneer Valley.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The hall hosts a range of events including concerts by national touring acts, the annual Silver Chord Bowl (the region's oldest collegiate a cappella showcase), lectures, and college ceremonies. The large capacity makes it suitable for major touring performances that smaller Northampton venues cannot accommodate. Past performers include Bob Weir, Indigo Girls, Pixies, Ani DiFranco, and Bob Dylan.
HISTORY
John M. Greene Hall was completed in 1910 and designed by New York architect Charles A. Rich of the firm Lamb and Rich, with construction by the Boston firm Hurton & Hemenway. The hall was named in honor of Reverend John M. Greene, whose counsel influenced Sophia Smith's decision to establish Smith College. The hall has served as a central venue for significant campus and community events for over a century.
