TAMWORTH
Tamworth is a rural White Mountains town that is home to the oldest ongoing professional summer theater in the United States. Its Main Street village setting and presidential connection give it a cultural identity that outweighs its small size.
The Barnstormers Theatre was co-founded in 1931 by Francis Cleveland, son of President Grover Cleveland, and has operated continuously since. The 272-seat theater occupies a converted Main Street storefront with a 28-foot proscenium stage and is one of only three Equity theaters in New Hampshire, distinguishing it from community-based companies.
Tamworth is a destination theater experience. You drive to the village, see a professional production in an intimate setting, and the surrounding countryside is part of the appeal. The summer season draws a loyal audience from across the Lakes Region and White Mountains.
Tip: The Barnstormers Theatre is on Main Street in Tamworth village. The summer season is the primary performance period. Check the schedule and buy tickets in advance.
