The Colonial Theatre is a historic 300-seat venue in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, serving as the home of arts, film, music, and culture in the state's North Country region. The theater is located in the heart of the White Mountains and is listed on the New Hampshire Registry of Historic Places. It operates as a nonprofit under The Friends of the Colonial.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming runs May through October and includes independent and world cinema with state-of-the-art digital projection and 7.1 surround sound, Grammy Award-winning performing artists, family entertainment, and community events. The venue was named "Best Vintage Movie Theatre" by Yankee Magazine.
HISTORY
The Colonial Theatre was built by Karl Abbot and opened on July 1, 1915, featuring Cecil B. DeMille's *The Girl of the Golden West*. Its architect was Francis Kennard of Tampa, Florida. During the 1910s and 1920s, Hollywood studios used the Colonial as a test market for films due to Bethlehem's status as a premier resort destination with over 30 hotels. The Friends of the Colonial formed in 2000 and presented its first season in 2002, followed by a two-phase renovation completed in 2017.
