HOPKINS CENTER FOR THE ARTS (THE HOP)

ABOUT

The Hopkins Center for the Arts (The Hop) is a multi-venue performing arts center on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. The primary concert hall, Spaulding Auditorium, seats 792 following a recent renovation. The complex also includes Faulkner Recital Hall, Warner Bentley Theater, Moore Theater, Loew Auditorium, and Alumni Hall, spanning four and a half acres of arts facilities.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Hop presents classical music, jazz, world music, film, dance, and theater across its multiple venues. Programming includes performances by Dartmouth student ensembles, nationally touring artists, Met Opera HD broadcasts, and a film series. The venue also offers student workshops in wood, metal, jewelry, and clay, along with a Fellows Program for arts administration experience.

HISTORY

The Hopkins Center opened in 1962 and was the first academic arts center of its kind in the United States, serving as a prototype for a generation of university performing arts complexes. It was designed by architect Wallace Harrison, who also designed Lincoln Center and the United Nations Building in New York. The building underwent a $123.8 million renovation by the firm Snohetta, reopening in October 2025 with expanded and modernized facilities.
