TAMWORTH
THE BARNSTORMERS THEATRE
ABOUT
The Barnstormers Theatre is a professional summer theater with 272 seats and a 28-foot proscenium stage, located on Main Street in Tamworth, New Hampshire. The air-conditioned venue features updated acoustics in a converted general store building.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The summer season runs from late June through August with a mix of classic and contemporary plays, musicals, and comedies. The theater employs professional actors alongside emerging talent for each production.
HISTORY
The company was founded in 1931 by Francis Cleveland, youngest son of President Grover Cleveland, along with his wife Alice and friend Edward P. Goodnow. The troupe originally barnstormed from town to town, sometimes traveling as far as eighty miles, which inspired the theater's name. After four years of touring, the company purchased Kimball's Store on Tamworth's Main Street in 1935 and converted it into a permanent theater. It is one of the oldest professional summer theatres in the United States.
