HATBOX THEATRE
ABOUT
Hatbox Theatre is an intimate black box performance space with variable seating for up to 90 people on three sides of the stage, originally located inside Steeplegate Mall in Concord, New Hampshire. The venue occupied the former space of a Coldwater Creek retail store.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming features locally produced plays, original works, musicals, concerts, and variety performances. The cooperative community model means multiple local theater groups and performers share the space. The thrust-style staging places audiences close to the action on three sides.
HISTORY
Hatbox Theatre opened on April 1, 2016, initially as a 52-seat space. Within its third month, seating was expanded to accommodate its current capacity. The theater operates as a cooperative community performing arts venue, filling a niche for small-scale, locally produced work in the Concord area.
ABOUT
Hatbox Theatre lost its Steeplegate Mall location in January 2024 when the lease was terminated. The company has been operating as a "nomadic" theater since, staging productions at Kimball Jenkins Carriage House and other borrowed spaces while actively seeking a new permanent home.
